Quality Index
OK: The worst quality. Usually for multi-gen VHS transfers. I only keep these shows around because
I haven't found better copies from anywhere else.
Good: A better VHS tape, though still not perfect.
Very Good: Almost excellent, this is usually used for the best VHS tape or a show which could be excellent
barring one or two minor things.
Excellent: The best quality.
What is the ideal runtime for a DVD? And why does it matter?
For a DVD+R or a DVD-R (4.36 GB), the ideal runtime seems to be around 90 minutes. The further away the time
goes from that, the more the visual quality will decrease. This is because a lot more information is scrunched
into the same space, which results in a loss of detail. The exception to this rule is if VHS footage has been
transferred to a DVD. In that case, the quality of the VHS tape has a lot to do with how the DVD will turn out.
This is what is meant by "Master Copy." A Master is the very first release of the show there is- ie, there's no
quality loss whatsoever.
For a DVD+DL (8 GB), 3 hours seems to be the appropriate time limit. Because there has yet to be a blank dual
layer disc that is completely reliable, I prefer to split or shrink my retail DVD's.
Okay, but what does split and shrink mean?
Splitting a disc is a process whereby a DVD that you'd buy at the store gets divided up into two parts so that
one retail DVD ends up on two DVD+R's. The menu is maintained on each disc, though certain segments will only
be available on one or the other.
Shrinking a disc (also known as cloning) is a process whereby the DVD is scrunched up a little bit more to reduce
the size so that the entire thing will fit on one DVD+R. This often results in a loss of visual quality, however.
